When STEAM Academy of Warren joined the ACCEL Schools network in 2015, it operated as a small, underperforming charter school in need of stability, vision, and academic renewal. With just 249 students enrolled and 100% of families facing economic challenges, the school confronted significant barriers to growth and achievement.

ACCEL partnered with school leadership to implement a comprehensive academic and operational strategy. The team focused on strengthening instruction, improving school culture, and delivering targeted interventions in literacy, math, and whole-child support.

Since 2015, the school’s Performance Index score climbed from 67.9 to 84.8, a 25% improvement made all the more significant by a temporary dip to 43.4 during the height of pandemic-related learning loss and recovery. At the same time, enrollment rose 48%, growing from 249 to 368 students across grades K–8. Even while serving more students and navigating post-pandemic recovery, STEAM Academy delivered 5-star ratings in both Student Progress and Gap Closing for three consecutive years and now ranks in the top 10% of charter schools statewide. The school also received the state’s Momentum Award, was designated a Quality Community School, and earned ACCEL’s highest honor: School of the Year in both 2024 and 2022.

With a strong student-to-staff ratio, high-impact instruction, and robust wraparound services, STEAM Academy demonstrates what’s possible when schools are built to support every learner. Its story reflects long-term investment, steady improvement, and a belief that every student can rise.
